Muted statuses: where they go and how to get them back
Muting moves someone to the bottom of the Updates tab rather than hiding them. What that means if you are saving.
Muting a contact's status is easy to do by accident — a long-press and one tap — and easy to forget you did.
What muting actually does
It does not stop their statuses arriving. They move to a separate Muted updates section at the bottom of the Updates tab, collapsed by default.
So the person is still posting, you are still receiving, and the content is one scroll away rather than gone.
Why this matters for saving
The 24-hour clock runs regardless. A muted contact's status expires on the same schedule as anyone else's, whether or not you scrolled far enough to see it.
If you have muted someone whose statuses you actually want to keep — a business account posting offers, a family member abroad — you will routinely find the window closed before you looked.
Unmuting
Scroll to the bottom of Updates, expand Muted updates, long-press the contact, choose unmute.
There is no global list of who you have muted, which is why this accumulates invisibly over years.
Muted is not blocked, and not hidden
Three different things worth separating:
- Muted — you still receive, sorted to the bottom, they cannot tell
- Removed from your audience — they stop seeing yours, via Status privacy settings
- Blocked — mutual, everything stops in both directions
Only the first is reversible without them noticing either way.
A practical check
If someone's statuses seem to have stopped, expand the muted section before concluding anything. It is a more common explanation than being blocked, and considerably less dramatic.
Once you can see a status, Status Saver treats a muted contact's post exactly like any other — WhatsApp writes the file to the same folder regardless of sort order.
