Status video plays with no sound — the usual causes

Five reasons, and the first one accounts for most of them. Worth checking in this order.

A status video that plays silently is usually one of five things, and the first is by far the most common.

1. The sender posted it muted

WhatsApp lets you mute audio when posting, and it is a single tap next to the send button — easy to hit by accident. Plenty of statuses are genuinely silent because the person who posted them made them silent.

Check: does the status show a muted-speaker icon? If so, there is no audio track to recover. No app can add sound that was never sent.

2. Your phone is on silent

Obvious and worth ruling out, because status audio follows the media volume, and the ringer switch or Do Not Disturb can leave media muted while notifications still work.

Check: press volume up while the status is playing — that adjusts media volume specifically, rather than the ringer.

3. It was posted as a GIF

WhatsApp converts short videos to GIF in some flows, and GIFs have no audio track by definition. A looping clip that plays instantly and silently is often this.

4. Bluetooth is routing elsewhere

If your phone is connected to a car, earbuds in a drawer, or a speaker in another room, audio is going there. This is easy to miss when the connection was made hours ago.

Check: the output selector in Control Centre or the notification shade.

5. The video genuinely has no audio track

Screen recordings without audio capture, some edited exports, and videos processed by certain apps arrive with no track at all.

Check: save the status and open it in another player. If it is silent everywhere, the file has no audio — which also means Status Saver cannot extract an MP3 from it, since there is nothing to extract.

If you saved it and it is silent

Convert it and see. If the conversion produces a file with no audio or fails, the source had no track — that is the difference between a playback problem and a file problem, and it takes one attempt to tell them apart.
