WhatsApp status won't load or download — what to check
Statuses stuck on a spinner, or showing a grey box. Six causes in the order worth checking them.
A status that will not load is a different problem from a status saver showing an empty list. This one is about WhatsApp itself failing to fetch the media — the spinner, or the grey placeholder.
Worth checking in this order, cheapest first.
1. Connection
Status media is downloaded on demand. A connection that is technically present but effectively dead — one bar, captive-portal wifi, a saturated hotspot — produces exactly this symptom.
Toggle airplane mode on and off, or switch between wifi and mobile data. This resolves it more often than anything else on the list.
2. Media auto-download is restricted
WhatsApp lets you limit auto-download per network type. If photos and videos are disabled on mobile data, statuses will not fetch until you are on wifi.
Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. Check what is enabled for each network.
3. Storage is full
WhatsApp needs somewhere to write the file. A phone with a few hundred megabytes free will fail quietly rather than telling you why.
Anything under about 1 GB free is worth clearing.
4. The status already expired
A status in the list that has passed 24 hours will not load, because the server no longer serves it. The entry can linger briefly in the UI after the media is gone.
5. Date and time are wrong
WhatsApp validates TLS connections, and a device clock that is significantly off breaks certificate checks. This presents as a general failure to load media rather than an obvious clock error.
Set date and time to automatic.
6. The app needs restarting or updating
A stale session sometimes fails to fetch new media until restarted. Force-stop WhatsApp and reopen it before anything more drastic.
What not to do
Do not clear WhatsApp's data to fix a loading problem. That removes local message history, and depending on your backup state some of it may not come back. It is a wildly disproportionate step for a status that will not load.
Once it loads
The file is then on your phone and Status Saver can see it — the app reads what WhatsApp has already downloaded, so a status that never loaded in WhatsApp cannot appear in any saver either. That is the usual explanation when one status is missing and the rest are fine.
