Media auto-download and why it decides what you can save
The setting that controls whether a status file reaches your phone at all — and therefore whether any saver can see it.
This one setting explains a surprising share of "my status saver shows nothing" reports, and it is not in the app you would expect.
Where it lives
WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download.

What it does to statuses
Auto-download controls whether media is fetched in advance or on demand.
With video disabled on mobile data, a video status is not pre-fetched. It downloads when you actually open and watch it — and only then does the file exist on your phone.
That is the key link: no file on the phone means nothing for a saver to read. A status saver is not downloading anything; it is reading what WhatsApp already wrote.
The symptom
You scroll past a status without opening it, then go looking for it in a saver, and it is not there. Nothing is broken — the file was never created, because you never watched it.
This is also why the advice on every troubleshooting page is "view the status first". It is not superstition; it is the mechanism.
Recommended settings
For saving reliably: enable photos and video on wifi. They arrive as you browse, and everything you have seen is available to save.
For data economy: disable video on mobile data. You will still be able to save anything you actually open — you just pay the download at that moment rather than in advance.
Roaming: leave everything off. Status video on roaming data is an expensive way to watch something that deletes itself.
What it does not affect
Saving itself uses no data. The download already happened when you viewed. Copying the file from WhatsApp's folder to your gallery is entirely local — which is also why it works in airplane mode.
